S:reu Davis of the Kingdom suggests in his recent letter that the President of the Republic’s interview with your paper “did seem to express a more Penguinean spirit than a Talossan one”.

The pretention of s:reu Davis to set himself up as some kind of authority on what is Talossan and what isn’t is quite interesting. Indeed, one might ask – exactly what does he know about Penguinea’s tradition? An argument can be made – indeed, I have made it elsewhere – that the Republic is a truer successor to the traditions of the pre-2004 Kingdom than the current Kingdom. Many Talossan old-timers will agree with me on this.

In response to s:reu Davis’s substantive point, I believe that the Free Commonwealth of Penguinea, which I co-founded, was indeed “intrinsically linked” to Talossa. How could it be otherwise, founded by refugees from Talossa’s former royal dictatorship? I see Penguinea as a “branch” or “heresy” in the Talossan tradition, rather than an altogether separate micronational culture. This is shown by how many former Penguineans have rejoined Talossa since the Revolution. Their successful reintegration into Talossa bodes well for a future re-integration of the two Talossan states.

But this will ONLY happen once Kingdom leaders agree to deal with Republic citizens as equals, and give equal recognition to our tradition of Talossanity – as we do to theirs. I repeat until I am blue in the face: One Talossa will only come about under a brand-new, democratic constitutional process, where EVERYTHING – including the monarchy – will be on the table for negotiation.

I would [...] like to address some assertions of the Republican President, Vercáriâ. While I very much enjoyed his story, I felt that he did seem to express a more Penguinean spirit than a Talossan one, and I am curious as to how citizens react to this. Or do they see the nations is intrinsically linked... the Republic of Pengolossa?

As to his statement that he thought that the Republic was more international than Talossa, I was uncertain. I wanted to get advice on the matter, so I tried to ask our Royal Archivist about that, but Ireland was too far to go to bother him. And when I wanted to ask our last Minister of Immigration, I realized France isn't exactly across the street either. And since I am in Florida and the King is off in some crazy square state, I couldn't ask him, either. So I guess Vercaria is correct when he says that we are all centrally located. That is a shame.

I was astonished reading [Alexander Davis'] letter to Octagon&Crown. you have appealed on Republic of Talossa's citizens to "renounce your farcical claims on Talossan territory and return to your fatherland." what an interesting appeal!

I am not going, obviously, to comment the first part of your statement, but rather the second. as we both know, Republic of Talossa exists already for four years. during this relativelly long period many new citizens immigrated into it. pure logic gives us guess, that they had a choice to immigrate either to Kingdom or to Republic. clearly, they have chosen, because of many different reasons, to join Republic. how do you expect them to "return to their fatherland", if they already ARE IN such? Republic is their fatherland!

on the other hand, I wholeheartidly support supra-standard contacts between people in Kingdom and Republic, as it can be seen in case of [the] TSFWS. Talossan heritage is just one and common, but that has nothing to do with kings and queens, it is rather matter of people.

The "competing" claims of physical territory are really a non-issue. Did the Regipats not coexist with the "real-world" province of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from the very day of it's founding? The word needing to be remembered here is "cestours". Even if boundaries overlap, the Kingdom's citizens are the Republic's cestours, and vice versa. They exist, but they have no bearing on the operations of the government, whichever government it may be.

The real issues are much deeper, of competing cultures. Cultures competeing not just with each other, but with the Founder, the universally-maligned KRI. Rejoice, that Kingdom and Republic have common ground there, at least.

Gödafrïeu Válcadác'h letter, published yesterday on your excellent periodical, is bewildering in nature, since a handful of good-natured wishes regarding a Christian holiday are not exactly a census or official endorsement, especially when one of them is this particular humanist's tongue-in-cheek jibe. However, he touches the heart of a matter very dear to my... heart. A Talossa divided cannot stand. Like a human being trying to make do with two legs, it wobbles back and forth, yearning for the long-lost tail of which we were deprived by evolution. Alternately and like that human, it strives for unification.

The solution is clear: we must all obtain tails, or Talossa must unite. Therefore, and I do not believe I am alone in this, I extend to the Republic of Talossa's citizens a hand of goodwill: renounce your farcical claims on Talossan territory and return to your fatherland. Your motherland has been up all night, worried sick about you, and making your fatherland promise to tan your hide when you get back. Alleviate her suffering, reunite Talossa, come back to us.

In the recent thread, "Happy Easter!", King John and others wax eloquently on the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death, the central tenet of the Christian faith, showing great evidence that the Kingdom of Talossan is more religiously conservative and more non-Mormon-Christian* in its culture than it ever has been and overtly so.

In the old Talossa, there was a healthy mix of pretty much everything: conservative-Democrat, conservative Republican, liberal Democrat, socialist, Christian, atheist, Buddhist, Baha'i, and even a bit of bona-fide communism. In the today's schizophrenic Talossa, there appears to be very much a division on non-Talossan (not to mention Talossan) political lines: the majority of "right-wingers" being in the Kingdom and the majority of "left-wingers" being in the Republic.

But is this division good for Talossa's long-term prospects? Would it not be better to have a single nation where people of various faiths (or no faith) and various non-Talossan political leanings could once more collaborate and be together again in one community, living in (relative at least) harmony?

In a recent "Inter-Talossan News" article (Republican reaction to King John's election Mixed, 17 Mar 2007), Sir Chirisch dal Navâ expresses his personal belief that "the Kingdom cannot thrive under (monarchy) for very long." His melancholy assessment may be right, but we in the Kingdom try to approach these things phlegmatically. We will just have to start with another twenty-seven years and see how things go from there. In any event, I do appreciate his well-wishes.
